Despite Medicare and Social Security being some of the most popular programs in the country, Republicans are headed into the 2022 midterms with a plan that would sunset all federal legislation, including Medicare and Social Security, after five years – putting at risk the millions of Americans who rely on the services these crucial programs provide.
The impact of the Republican plan on Michigan’s seniors and disabled workers would be disastrous: Over 2,093,000 Michiganders rely on Medicare for their health coverage and 2,250,000 Michiganders receive Social Security benefits each month to cover everything from rent to putting food on the table.
“Republicans have made it abundantly clear that they will end Medicare coverage and Social Security for millions of Michiganders if they win control of Congress in 2022. Seniors and social security beneficiaries deserve the hard-fought benefits of these critical programs, and it’s shameful that Republicans are once again trying to attack them,” said Michigan Democratic Party Chair Lavora Barnes. “President Biden and Democrats are committed to making sure this latest attempt doesn’t succeed, and voters won’t forget that.”
While Republicans are threatening seniors’ hard earned benefits, President Biden and Democrats have proposed measures to bolster Social Security and responsibly reduce the deficit without touching Medicare or Social Security by making billionaires pay their fair share in taxes – while also lowering costs for working families.
