Republicans are already on defense over their plan to raise taxes, on 40% of Michiganders and cause premiums to skyrocket by eliminating coverage for millions, they’re now spending this April recess explaining their record of voting against measures to lower costs for Americans. Over the past two weeks, Republicans in Congress have voted against bills to make insulin more affordable — which 1 in 10 Michiganders rely on — and against legislation to help over 5,000 Michigan restaurants businesses who didn’t receive the first round of Restaurant Revitalization Fund relief cover costs.
House Democrats, meanwhile, overwhelmingly voted in favor of bills to cap the monthly cost of insulin at $35 and get much needed relief to local businesses. And President Biden has proposed a plan to make sure billionaires’ taxes go up – not the taxes of working Michiganders.
“Michigan Democrats have overwhelmingly voted in favor of bills that will make life-saving drugs like insulin more affordable, expand affordable health care for thousands under the Affordable Care Act, cut taxes for working families, and get much-needed relief to Main Street Businesses. While Democrats are focused on lowering costs, Republicans are running on an agenda that will actually increase costs and raise taxes for our most middle-class families,” said MDP spokesperson Alyssa Bradley. “With Tax Day just around the corner, voters should know that if Republicans win in November, next year’s income and filings could look drastically different for Michigan’s working families.”
See for yourself how Democrats and Republicans’ agendas stack up against each other:
Republicans | Democrats | |
Taxes | Increase taxes on 40% of Michiganders | Make billionaires pay their fair share without raising taxes on working Michiganders |
Drug Prices | 6 Michigan Republican Representatives voted against a bill to cap the cost of insulin | Every Michigan Democratic Representative supported bill to cap monthly insulin costs at $35 |
Health Care | Repeal ACA, which could increase health care costs and strip coverage from Michiganders | Built on the ACA to lower health care costs for 303,000 Michiganders |
Small Business Relief | Vast majority voted against providing relief to 5,309 of eligible restaurants in Michigan | Vast majority voted to get local restaurants assistance they need to deal with expenses |
The difference couldn’t be clearer — while President Biden and Democrats want to make the wealthiest pay their fair share to help lower costs for working Michiganders, Republicans have no plan to lower costs – leaving working Michiganders to foot the bill.
