Republican candidates for governor Kevin Rinke and James Craig are standing against putting money back in the pockets of Michiganders, while bipartisan leaders praised the news that Michigan families will receive a $400 refund check for every auto-insured vehicle in the state – the result of Governor Whitmer’s bipartisan auto insurance reform.
Governor Whitmer worked across the aisle to put Michigan first, inking an “historic” bipartisan deal that is already delivering savings for drivers. Even Republican leaders House Speaker Lee Chatfield and Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey praised this massive cost-saving reform “couldn’t have gotten done without her.” Additionally, legislative Republicans celebrated the announcement once the refund amount was finalized.
In contrast, both Rinke and Craig are letting their hyperpartisan politics get in the way of recognizing a clear win for Michiganders. During a taping of ‘Off the Record’, Kevin Rinke described the reform as a “mistake” and said he would have vetoed it had he been governor instead. And James Craig took to Facebook to blast the checks in a post without specifying what his issue was with the refund.
The rest of the candidates in the crowded, 12-person primary haven’t even bothered to discuss what these historic reforms mean for Michigan drivers.
MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:
“Kevin Rinke and James Craig are both opposing a major bipartisan win for Michigan working families that is cutting costs and putting money directly in the pockets of drivers. They are more interested in political games than delivering a clear win for drivers and working families across the state.”
