LANSING — After a disastrous campaign reboot week in which he said that infrastructure wasn’t a priority of his and that he was in favor of reverting reproductive healthcare back to a criminal offense in Michigan, James Craig’s party insider handlers have put him back in his box — unless you’re a chummy national cable anchor. Craig will be on with Judge Jeanine Pirro tonight for his third appearance on her show since May.
On Mackinac island, Detroit Dodger Craig is once again doing what he does best, refusing to answer questions as he has been for months.
Reactions from Michigan reporters can be read below:
Sergio Martinéz-Beltrán (Bridge Michigan): After the event, reporters tried to talk to Craig but he kept walking. Most of the other gubernatorial candidates on the island have talked to me and other reporters. Craig has yet to meet with reporters on the island. #MRLC2021
Emily Lawler (MLive): On the porch, @chiefjamescraig spoke briefly to college volunteers and is taking photos. I’m told he’s not taking media questions, but we’ve been invited to watch.
Ben Solis (Gongwer): Been trying several times to get a one-on-one with the former chief, myself, but to no avail. I have since interviewed Tudor Dixon and hope to talk to candidate Mike Brown later this afternoon.
MDP spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite issued the following statement:
“We considered dusting off an old statement on this since at this point Detroit Dodger James Craig has refused to speak with Michigan reporters so many times it’s now an understood aspect of the way he intends to run his campaign. And who could blame him? Look what happens when he is allowed to answer questions. After just one week he’s identified himself as a anti-choice extremist that lacks any sort of vision for Michigan. We’re only surprised it took him this long to run back to his safe space on friendly national cable news.”
