While Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans obstruct efforts to extend supplemental unemployment insurance benefits, over 20,000 Michiganders filed for unemployment insurance in one week alone.
Over 1.4 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits this week and the $600 weekly supplemental benefit will soon be stripped from unemployed Michiganders. The continued high unemployment claims come as Trump has allowed the COVID-19 pandemic to spiral out of control, with over 80,000 cases and 6,000 deaths in Michigan.
“Donald Trump has created an economic crisis for our state as his ineffective COVID-19 response has allowed the pandemic to spiral out of control,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesman Christian Slater. “Now, our failed president is threatening to callously strip critical unemployment benefits from Michiganders suffering from his failures. Michigan’s working families can’t trust Donald Trump.”
