Following the passage of the House resolution against President Bush’s plans to escalate the Iraq war, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer condemned the eight Michigan Republican Members of Congress who voted against it. Representatives Dave Camp, Vern Ehlers, Pete Hoekstra, Joe Knollenberg, Thad McCotter, Candice Miller, Mike Rogers and Tim Walberg all voted against the resolution.

Today Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer departed for Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP). Brewer’s weeklong U.P. visit will include many local party functions in the counties of Chippewa, Delta, Gogebic, Houghton, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette and Ontonagon. Brewer will also spend time in the Northern Lower Peninsula counties of Cheboygan and Emmet.

Anuzis Lies About MRP’s Robocalls (1/17/07)
Today Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer criticized Michigan Republican Party (MRP) Chair Saul Anuzis for blatantly lying in Monday’s Midland Daily News. The newspaper reported that Anuzis told a group of local Republicans that “The state Republican Party made none of the recorded, computerized ‘robocalls’ that irritated many Michigan residents before the November election.” But Anuzis himself has admitted to and even bragged about the annoying robocalls the MRP sent out this past cycle and a MRP campaign finance report shows that the party paid tens of thousands of dollars for what is listed as “Automated Calls.”
MI Democrats Applaud New Law Making it Easier for Citizens Living Overseas to Vote (1/16/07)
Today Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer applauded the passage of House Bill 4481 which was signed into law as Public Act 605 of 2006 earlier this month. The new law will make it easier for the Michigan citizens who are currently living overseas to cast ballots in the state’s elections. Overseas voters can now register to vote and apply to vote by absentee ballot using a standardized postage-free federal postcard application, without having to send a notarized affidavit.

LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) unveiled a new television titled “Greenville”. The ad, which begins airing statewide today, shows how Governor Jennifer M. Granholm fought for the workers in Greenville after their Electrolux jobs were sent to Mexico. The Governor persuaded Uni-Solar build a factory in Greenville that will create up to 1,200 new jobs.
Michigan Democrats Announce 2006 Voter Protection Program (10/25/06)
LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) announced their 2006 Voter Protection Program, a program that will deploy over one thousand trained lawyers and volunteers at polling locations statewide to defend the rights of Michigan voters on Election Day. The MDP has set up a toll-free telephone help line (888) DEM-VOTE (888-336-8683) that voters can call on Election Day if they have any questions about their voting rights or if they want to find their polling location.
MDP Unveils New TV Ad “Care” (10/24/06)
LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) unveiled a new television ad on Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos titled “Care”. The ad, which begins airing statewide today, shows how DeVos has no plan for making health care more accessible or affordable to Michigan citizens. DeVos’ only plan for health care is to “get a job.” Governor Jennifer M. Granholm proposed the revolutionary Michigan First Health Care Plan that will, for the first time, provide access to affordable health care for all citizens in Michigan. Negotiations with the federal government are on track to implement the program in April, 2007.
GOP Culture of Corruption Claims Land (10/20/06)
LANSING- Today Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Chair Mark Brewer criticized Secretary of State (SOS) Terri Land for improperly using her position to lobby for a law that directly benefits her husband ’s business. Land in a SOS office press release from a year ago, claimed that she had lived up to a campaign promise to “help communities clean up abandoned vehicles” by lobbying for a law that allows towing companies to remove abandoned vehicles easier. What the press release did not disclose was that Land’s husband benefited from her efforts because according to its Articles of Incorporation, Daniel Hibma (Land’s spouse) owns Land Impound, LLC.
DeVos Knows All About Business Fraud (10/19/06)
LANSING – As reports surface about the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) charging several former Delphi executives with accounting fraud, Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer reminded voters that Dick DeVos has had is own problems with business fraud. In 1982, while DeVos was head of Amway’s international operations, the Canadian government indicted Amway for avoiding paying $28 million in duties on imported goods into Canada by illegally undervaluing the goods. A year later, Amway plead guilty to fraud and was forced to pay the Canadian government close to $25 million, the largest fine in Canadian history.

LANSING- Today Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) Chair Mark Brewer refuted claims by GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos that he incorporated Amway ’s Asian operations in Bermuda for no other reason than to avoid paying U.S. taxes. The DeVos campaign conceded yesterday that the Amway subsidiary moved to Bermuda, but in MIRS the campaign claimed it was “because it was a better place to do business.” An Amway/Alticor spokesman claimed the company moved there because it was more “stable.” But Amway never actually did any of their business in Bermuda. In fact, Michigan Law defines Bermuda as a country that is a “tax haven country.”
DeVos Moved Amway to Bermuda, Avoided U.S. Taxes (10/17/06)
LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) criticized Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos for incorporating Amway ’s Asian operations in Bermuda. By moving Amway to Bermuda, DeVos’ family was able to avoid paying U.S. taxes and profit at the expense of regular people.
Dick DeVos: Lying About Amway Importing Products Made in China (10/11/06)
LANSING- Today Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer provided evidence showing that GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos has been lying about his company Amway importing products made in China to the United States. Brewer displayed packages of Amway tissues that are labeled “Made in China” and “Sold Only by Amway Distributors.” The Amway tissues were bought in the United States from an Amway distributor. DeVos and his campaign, when referring to Amway’s manufacturing, have repeatedly claimed that “nothing made in China is sold in the United States.”
Brewer Demands DeVos Disclose Due Diligence Documents on Alterra Deal (10/9/06)
LANSING- Today Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer demanded that GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos disclose legal documents from his original Alterra investment. Legal documents for an investment that substantial are extensive and will definitively answer some of the key questions surrounding DeVos ’ knowledge of the abuse of seniors at Alterra.

LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) unveiled a new television ad on Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos titled “Twins”. The ad, which begins airing today, shows how there is no difference between DeVos and President Bush. DeVos’ family has given over a half million dollars to Bush’s political campaign and a strong supporter of Bush’s unfair trade and tax policies.
Rich DeVos: Dick DeVos Knew About Alterra’s Abuse (10/5/06)
LANSING- Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer pointed to an article by Rob Kirkbride in today ’s Grand Rapids Press today that disproves GOP gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos’ claim that he only “recently” learned of the abuse of seniors at the DeVos controlled Alterra nursing homes. The Press reported that “Richard DeVos said Wednesday his son, Dick, and the rest of the family were given only a short briefing about problems at the former Alterra Healthcare Corp. nursing home chain.”
Jerry Tubergen: DeVos Right-Hand Man and Alterra Chairman (10/4/06)
LANSING- A day after the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) documented the abuse of seniors at Alterra assisted living centers while Alterra was controlled by Dick DeVos, the MDP pointed to evidence showing that DeVos has much closer ties to Alterra than he is revealing, starting with the Chairman of the Alterra Board. Alterra Chairman of the Board Jerry Tubergen is not only DeVos ’ business associate, but his longtime financial planner, neighbor and friend. DeVos’ extremely close relationship with Tubergen makes it impossible for DeVos not to have known about Alterra’s national nursing home scandal during DeVos’ control of Alterra.
Williams Leads Cox for Attorney General (10/4/06)
LANSING- In a recent poll conducted for the Michigan Democratic Party by Lauer Research, results show that Amos Williams, the Democratic nominee for Attorney General, leads incumbent Republican Attorney General Mike Cox by a margin of 41% to 37% with 2% for minor party candidates and 20% undecided.

LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) unveiled its fourth statewide television ad on Republican gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos titled “Express”. The ad, which begins airing today, shows how after DeVos and his family gave millions of dollars in political contributions to Republican leaders they slipped a last minute 19 million dollar tax break into a tax bill, designed just for DeVos and Amway. DeVos has a long history of unethical business and political practices.

LANSING- Today the Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer sharply refuted Dick DeVos’ claim that he would implement a package of “Special Interest” bills as Governor. Brewer pointed out how hypocritical DeVos’ position is given that he has not only been directly associated with numerous political action committees (PACs), but he has even created several of them. LANSING- Today Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer criticized the political action committee (PAC) Voice the Vote for failing to file a campaign finance report with the Secretary of State. The Voice the Vote’s failure to disclose its supporters comes on the heels of its leader Adolph Mongo flip-flopping on who paid for the infamous ad which compared Nazi leader Adolf Hitler to Governor Granholm and several former Democratic Presidents. (RBC) voted to accept the Commission on Presidential Nomination Timing and Scheduling’s report that recommends several changes in
the Democratic 2008 Presidential nominating calendar. The RBC voted nearly unanimously to have Iowa hold the first caucus, followed by 1
or 2 new caucuses, the New Hampshire primary, 1 or 2 new primaries and then the national “window” for all other caucuses and
